Minds and bodies were put to the test last week at Bauerwood’s fifth annual fundraiser, Minds in Movement!
The main event for the day was a grade-based walk-a-thon for classes to each walk a route through the neighborhood and have various “stops” along the way. At each stop the students are participate in a challenge which are organized and planned by the teachers who use this a chance to work in the curriculum in a fun way.
The Parent Club utilizes the skills and talents of 50 – 75 volunteers and many parents like to walk with their children. Angela Van Buren, Walk-a-thon founder and former fundraising chair, says, “It is great because even parents that still have little ones can push their younger ones in the stroller and still be able to help out by having extra eyes out for safety.”
The Jenison community continues to support this event with generosity and this year over twenty area businesses provided financial support and prizes for fundraising incentives. Businesses that helped out included: Hudsonville Lanes, Frosty Treat, J & H Family Stores, All Area Plumbing, Kenowa Credit Union, Palermo Pizza and many more!
One of the tangible ways the sponsors support is evident is in the t-shirts worn by Bauerwood students and staff throughout the event. “The design on the front of the shirt changes every year and the 5th grade students get to come up with a design. Our art teacher Ashley Hankamp picks the “top ten” and from there we get staff opinion as well as Image Builders who prints the t-shirts what will transfer well. This year Emma Wolak was the 5th grade student who design was chosen.”
So far, the event has raised $15,800 and money was still being collected! 100% of the money raised will be directed back to the school and used for various school needs such as second grade dictionary’s, weekly readers, Bauerwood Bash, Student Scholarships, gas for field trips, library supplies, Publishing Center and teacher budgets.
In addition to the Walk-a-Thon the students had the opportunity to move to Zumba led by Tiffany Louzon, a Bauerwood mom, and they danced to the sounds of Bauerwood grandfather Rick Dragicevich!
“The community always amazes me on how they will support Jenison Public School.
The students amaze me with the motivation they have to get the pledges and the generosity of the parents,
family members, friends and all the sponsors that support Bauerwood.” – Angela VanBuren
